and to lead them to a deeper faith.

Spiritual Water, Light, and Fire

1. Water and Light

God used water and light to symbolize the Word of life.
What is the reason?

Any animals and plants cannot survive without both water and light.
Therefore, water and light are the sources of life for all living things.
According to Jn 1:3, God created all things through the Word
and it says nothing that has been made was made without the word of God.

God is the Creator of all things and God is the Word (Jn 1:1).
This is why the One true God, who is spirit, is the LORD of all creation
(Gn 1; Jn 4:24).

This all comes together and makes sense when we remember that
the Bible also refers to God’s word as water (Am 8:11-13) and light (Jn 1:4).

Am 8:11     "The days are coming," declares the Sovereign LORD,
"when I will send a famine through the land -
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
Jn 1:4         In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

Just as everything cannot live without water and light,
men cannot live without God because he is life (Jn 1:4).
God used water and light to symbolize his words of life to let people know that
his words provide life to human souls (Dt 32:1-2; Isa 55:1-3; Am 8:11; Jn 1:1-4).

Dt 32:1-2     Listen, O heavens, and I will speak;
hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew.
                   like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.

Isa 55:1-3    Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters
and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me; hear me, thay your soul may live. ~

Then, how can we receive God who is water and light?

Jn 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.”
Therefore, we can accept God, who is life, into our hearts
by receiving God's word (Heb 8:10).
God also compared his words of life to his seed (Lk 8:11).
This means people who are born again of his seed by receiving his words
become gods themselves (Jn 10:35; Ac 17:29).
The same idea can also be expressed in terms of the light.
God is with those who choose to come into the light
that represents the word of life.
God cannot dwell within us
if the word that was there in the beginning is not in our hearts.
However, God can dwell within us only when we have the word. (Jn 3:31-34)

2. Fire

John the Baptist testified that Jesus would be the one who would baptize people
with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Mt 3:11).
In Lk 12:49, Jesus said, “I have come to bring fire on the earth,
and how I wish it were already kindled!”
The Old Testament compared God’s word in the mouth of Jeremiah to fire
and God’s people to the wood the fire consumed (Jer 5:14).
According to Rev 11:5, fire from the mouths of God’s two witnesses
devours anyone who tries to harm them.
Taken together, all of these passages make it clear that
the Bible uses fire to figuratively represent God’s word.

What is the role of this fire?
It can be grace. Also it can be judgment.
God's word with full of love is the grace
and God's word with full of wrath is judgement.

Burning up people's sin and wickedness is baptism (Mt 3:11).
Jesus wished in Lk 12:49 that his fire were already kindled
because he wanted the words of the Holy Spirit
that are like fire
to enter people and consume their sins.

Sometimes, in his grace, God causes our hearts to burn as we listen to his words
(Lk 24:32).

Lk 24:32     They asked each other,
"Were not our heats burning within us
while he talked with us on the road and open the Scriptures to us?"

In summary,
the fire of God's word can be God's grace,
and can be a baptism that cleanses sins,
and can be God's judgement.
